Peace between Israel and Palestine - Impossibility or an Upheld Agenda?
66The time for Peace is now!
History, both oral and written enables us to understand that the modern version of the conflict between Israel and Palestine dates as far back as 1948. This was a time when Israeli’s were being resettled after World War II. Therefore, today, in 2009, at least 60 years have gone by without a resolution to the conflict. The question therefore arises as to whether it is an impossibility to achieve the much needed peace or is it an upheld agenda through which some have always benefitted?
It may be quite difficult to understand why a conflict should last over six decades without resolution. After all, even nations that were foes during both World Wars have overcome their differences to forge ahead with development through reliance on one another. In addition, people of Israel and Palestine have over time fallen in love and engaged in marriages with families now having roots from the two areas. If these people could go this far, then why can their leaders not fall in love as well, for the sake of their people?
It is well known that six decades is a long time at least with respect to human life time and many have been taken part in seeking a resolution to this problem over its duration. While some leaders have showed some willingness to find a solution to this problem over time, others simply enjoyed the tax payers’ money of their nations without any useful contribution. It is clear that the persistence of this problem is because of the lack of will of politicians but what remains unclear is whether this is an agenda they have upheld.
It is indeed sad to watch individual benefit being placed before collective benefit especially when these individuals are put in power by the people who continue to suffer. Some attribute the lack of a resolution to this problem over the years to religion and even extremism. However, these people fail to remember that people of different religions have co-habited and continue to co-habit peacefully in many nations around the world. Therefore, advancing religion or extremism as an excuse for continuous suffering, killing and massacre is lame. Muslims and Christians have been leaving in harmony for example, in Cameroon, for several decades even though this is a developing nation with several problems including poverty. Therefore, if religion has been or is a problem in efforts to give the people of Israel and Palestine the right to peace, education, development and prosperity, then maybe leaders around the world should seek help from Cameroon, for example.
It is inexcusable to watch politicians come and go commonly richer than before they came to office without people being able to get what they deserve to live their short lives happily. While politicians implicated in finding a solution to this conflict have prospered, the people of Israel and Palestine have been rewarded with loss of life and untold suffering. Time has come for leaders to search their conscience and take a decision to resolve this conflict for good. However, because as the author of the God Father puts it “Politics and crime are the same thing”, it is imperative for the people of Israel and Palestine to continue to fall in love and seek to elect only leaders willing to fall in love in order to bring peace and a future to the people. Sadly, it is evident that peace would have to be brought to this region by the people of Israel and Palestine instead of waiting and continue to experience familiar drama from a “Quartet” or similar group coined by politicians of doubtful intentions.
